Home energy conservation is not just about saving money, it’s about saving the planet for future generations. We should all try and take measures, even if they’re only small steps, towards reducing the “footprint” we leave. Something as simple as changing a lightbulb can make a surprisingly dramatic impact in the energy efficiency and cost savings within your home! Below are some top tips on how you can make a difference and save money :

Tip 1 – Choose your paint color wisely. Believe it or not, dark colored interior paint absorbs more light and therefore you need more lighting to achieve the same effect. Consider using brighter colors which not only reflect light better, but make teh room feel brighter and more cheerful!

Tip 2 – Use more Energy Efficient Dishwashers. A dishwasher which is 90% full uses 4 units of electricity. However, if it is only 50% full it still uses 3 units of electricity. Therefore you should wait until your dishwasher is as full as possible before using it.

Tip 3 – Insulate your Water Heater. Buy a water heater blanket and keep your water heater insulated. You’ll save around $40 per year. Water heater insulation blankets are designed for gas, oil or electric heaters and are relatively inexpensive.

Tip 4 – Energy Efficient Light Bulbs. Replacing a single incandescent bulb with an energy efficient fluorescent bulb can atcually save up to $50 over the bulb’s lifetime. If every home in the US swapped 1 incandescent bulb for a fluorescent bulb, there would be enough energy saved to power 2.5 Million homes!

Tip 5 – Reduce Heat loss through Windows. Up to 16% of household heating can be lost through unprotected windows. The heat loss can be reduced by closing drapes at night or installing insulating shutters. If you home has large windows which don’t generally receive direct sunlight, try keeping the curtains/drapes over these windows closed as much as possible.

Tip 6 – Smart Power Strips. A massive 75% of electricity is consumed by applicances are switched “off”. Using a power strip and turning it off when not in use can significantly reduce your electrity consumption.

Tip 7 – Energy Efficient Washing Machines. When choosing your next washing machine, choose one which is front-loading. Did you know front-loader washing machines use 25% less energy. Also, selecting a warm/cold cycle instead of a hot/warm cycle can save 10 cents per load.

Tip 8 – Clean Air Conditioning Filters Regularly. Cleaning or, if neccesary replacing your AC and furnace filters reguarly can help improve air flow and efficiency. Also consider using a dust collector or air filtration system.

Tip 9 – When possible, Air Dry your Laundry. Clothes lines are cheap, and best of all they’re free to use! Air drying your clothing in the Spring/Summer months can help save as much as $75 a year.

Tip 10 – Energy Efficient Thermostats Save You Money. Are you paying for heat or electricity you don’t even need? You can save money by using a programmable thermostat which switches off whilst you’re at work, away on vacation or even asleep.

We have a situation in regards to our energy consumption. We are using resources that pollute the planet. In addition, these resources are depleting more and more everyday. As a whole, we must do our part in repairing the environment and look towards the future with a better and greener plan in place. We must choose alternative energy over fossil fuels to keep our planet as healthy as possible.

Wind energy is one alternative energy that should be examined more as we look towards a greener Earth. The cost of installing a windmill can seem to be costly up front but you must remember in the long run youll be saving money due to the fact that windmills produce free nonpolluting wind energy into wind power. Some may think that they need a lot of wind in order to be able to efficiently use a windmill. You may be surprised that people who live in areas that have even a lower average wind speed of 11 miles per hour still get good results in producing wind energy.

Its not rare to hear that many people who consider a windmill for their house get turned off because of the cost the set up and installation. If you find a professional installation too costly, you can always resort to building your very own windmill! Save on cost, and it is easier than expected to complete! Homemade windmills and deciding to build your own windmill are great alternative energy decisions when you want to help the environment and the planet but not while busting your wallet. Building your own windmill takes some planning and some extra free time. Here are a few tips to follow when making your own homemade windmill. Here are a few tips on how to build a windmill.

Get a good plan to make a windmill for your household. Keep in mind the output you want the windmill to generate.

Look for sturdy components. Your homemade windmill should not get damaged by heavy winds.

Be sure to compare the prices and the quality of the materials and make your decision based on your economic situation and the size of your project.

When looking for a windmill how-to guide, look for the following features:

Illustrations:

Colored pictures provide visual descriptions, something that is necessary for a project such as this. If you have illustrations to help you on your homemade windmill project, itll definitely help assist you rather than deter you.

Simple to understand instructions:

If youre like me. You wont want a guide that provides expert only language. There are enough guides out there that have great easy to read instructions, be sure to find that one that fits your needs. Look for one that has easy-to-understand language making your task fluid.

Materials list and where to find them:

Your expansive windmill how-to book should be able to provide you with detailed descriptions of all the tools you need to build a homemade windmill. Two guides you may want to look into include the two at the top of their market, Earth4Energy and Green DIY Energy. Check out Go-SolarEnergy.com to find a review of Green DIY Energy Review to make an educated decision. Good Luck!

If you are trying to save money on electricity you might be interested in getting a solar powered hot tub instead of a regular type. One concern of any new hot tub owner is always how much the heating bill will be for the hot tub and is there any way to reduce it? On the surface, a solar hot tub sounds like it might be a solution but is it really going to work and save energy like you want it to?

Hot tubs typically don’t completely turn off and maintain the temperature at a high level so the unit is always using power to some degree. This is actually cheaper than turning off the power and letting the water cool between uses. One thing any hot tub needs to keep in the heat and use the least power is a cover that traps the heat. If you have a cover that does not do the job, you will have costly heat loss that will use unnecessary energy.

Some hot tub covers have solar cells on them to assist with maintaining the heat but of course you need to live in a sunny climate for this type of cover to be effective. If you dont live somewhere where the sun is out frequently, any sort of solar accessories for your hot tub will probably be a waste. The reason why the manufacturers don’t make solar tubs is this very reason that most people don’t live in a place where there is sun year round.

The big question is whether it is really worth the extra price you might pay for solar panels if you do live in a place that gets a lot of sun. Will you end up saving enough energy and money and how long will it take for you to recoup the expense you will have to incure to buy the solar panels? These are some questions you should know the answer to before you go out and spend too much time and money fitting your hot tub with solar cells. Solar cells and panels are usually expensive so you have to know what you are doing first.

Now, if you are purely trying to save energy and the environment, you may not care about whether there are money savings or whether it is truly economical. However, solar hot tubs are similar to the hybrid car because they might not be worth it in the end when you do the math to calculate your savings. Now that gasoline prices have gone back down to where they were, demand for hybrid cars has gone way down because they are so much more expensive and not worth the extra investment. Solar hot tubs are similar in that you may never get your money back in energy savings.

Everyone can benefit from the advantages of residential solar energy, but the tricky part is taking the time and understanding where to get started. The sun is a renewable resource meaning that it will never run out and so the great thing is that even if everyone in the world were to rely on solar energy, there would still be more than enough to go around and we would never have to worry about tapping out this resource as we do with fuel and coal. The affects of using residential solar energy is beneficial to everyone in the world and not only that but the benefits you receive when you start using it are superb. When developing a residential solar energy system for yourself here are the basic steps you need to follow.

Everyone can benefit from the advantages of residential solar energy, but the tricky part is taking the time and understanding where to get started. Since the sun comes up everyday, gives us heat energy all day without fail it is considered a renewable energy source which also means that if everyone in the world relied on the sun to provide power there would still be plenty left over after everyone got their fill unlike fossil fuels. The great thing about residential solar energy is that it is extremely advantageous to use and benefit from personally the other great thing is that the byproduct of using this type of energy is that it also benefits the rest of mankind. Here are the first basic steps to take when designing a residential solar energy system of your own.

Of all the different advantages of residential solar energy, one of the most talked about has to do with the environment and how beneficial solar energy is because it does not contribute to problems like global warming. One of the greatest advantages of solar energy is that it is so cost effective. The best idea is to get a list ready that tells you all the necessary supplies needed in order to begin building. Just make sure that you read through the plan carefully and do not miss any steps or supplies because you don’t want to get started only to find out that you are missing something.

Residential solar energy also helps with the reduction of unwanted byproducts. Electricity that is produced from coal results in a great deal of waste and this adds to the problem of pollution in the world today. By using kerosene lamps and other fuel sources that give off fumes less and using solar energy improves our air quality.Residential solar energy has so many advateges it is simply amazing and it is a woder that not everyone is jumping at this opportunity.

In order to really take advantage of residential solar energy systems make sure you only invest in high quality materials.Making the change is a big decision to some people who are still on the fence when it comes to this issue. Kerosene lamps and diesel generators run out of fuel and need to be replenished to be operational, while solar energy just remains constant and endless.Neither are true and it is really simple to set up a residential solar energy system in a home.

As you can see, those tips are very powerful, and before we continue, I just want you to know that you can find some great resources in the resource box below this article.

Take a look at some of the advantages that residential solar energy has in store for you!

As our society matures and we begin to understand and appreciate that everything we do will have an impact on our environment, we are starting to look for better ways of supplying our energy needs. Using wind turbines might just be one of those alternative sources of energy. Harnessing the power of the wind is nothing new, and now both countries around the world and the typical homeowner can produce electricity using the wind and household wind turbines.

In it’s simplest terms, wind power is captured by a wind turbine which then turns that energy into electricity. The same windmills which for centuries have ground wheat, are now being used to make electricity. Thanks to advances in technology, wind power can be used by industry as well as the average homeowner to generate electricity. Many people and businesses are beginning to see the real advantage to this kind of energy. It is free, readily available, doesn’t pollute, and completely renewable. If you look, you will see more small household wind turbines popping up in your neighbors backyards and on the roofs of local businesses.

For those interested in purchasing a wind turbine and having it installed, it will cost you between $600 and $12,000. That’s a big expenditure for most people. And with a projected energy savings of about 80% it would take quite a long time to recoup your investment. However, it is now possible to build a wind turbine yourself for just a few hundred dollars.

More and more homeowners have decided to build a wind turbine. It is far easier than you might have imagined. The supplies you need to build a wind turbine can be found in any hardware store and will cost about $200, and the whole building process won’t take more than a few days. A good instruction manual with easy to follow directions will guide you every step of the way.

Since one turbine can be enough to generate almost 60% of the electricity you’ll need for your home, you can start to realize significant savings. Every day your wind turbine is working means another day of savings.

So if you want to save yourself some money while doing your part to help out the planet, you should consider building and installing your own home wind turbines. You can easily and inexpensively build a wind turbine in just a few days, and enjoy the savings for years to come.

A wind turbine can reduce your electric expenses by as much as 50 to 90 percent. Why not join the green revolution and learn more about household wind turbines.

Find it difficult every time you set eyes on your electric bill to swallow the bill? Its high time and we need to take serious measures to reduce the power bill. Dont fret. Here are some tips to help you reduce your electric bill. Some of these tips include how to effectively use your current appliances and others include how to make your own energy.

Make sure to discuss with family member about the importance of saving electricity. You can entice them with a reward such as a family vacation for all the money youve saved from your energy bill.

One quick suggestion is to ask them to turn off the lights before exiting a room even if they do plan on coming back at some point. Make sure to switch off all the appliances even if you are sure to be back in five minutes. Every drop of water makes an ocean.

Doing these small precautions is going to save you energy in the short term and long term as youll instill habits in those you live with and in yourself.

Taking the time to plan on how to save energy is a great way to think smartly about power. Save energy by using energy efficient bulbs such as CFL bulbs. Use these bulbs instead as they use less energy that traditional light bulbs.

Buy the energy saver gadgets that are available in the market. Such gadgets will monitor the intake of the entire power supply in your house and makes you take decision on how to control the usage.

Some people argue that most of us pay a high electric bill is due to the fact that we have so many electrical items in our house. But the truth is that the electricity bill is not directly connected or affected due to the number of gadgets, but by the way one uses them.

Here is an example of using appliances and gadgets intelligently:

Take note to switch off the computer monitor when not in use. It consumes maximum power and it just takes a second to switch it again.

Lastly we suggest that for reducing the electricity bill by taking benefit of reading the energy saving guide like Earth4Energy that has some of the best solutions to generate energy at home and providing free electricity to some of your home appliances.

There is something special when you are invited to a friends house and you find the floors are heated and warm. Installing radiant heated floors is something most of us would like to do but will never get around to doing. Not only is the cost somewhat prohibitive but also the idea of ripping up your floors to get under them sounds like too much trouble to most people.

On the rare occasions when radiant heat is installed in a home, it is most often found in the kitchen or master bathroom. Generally, it is the high-end homes that this option may be available. It is the expense, and installation headaches that will keep most homeowners from ever experiencing the enjoyment of radiant heat in their homes.

After a cold winter of dry heat pulsing through your house, you might be interested in radiant heat under the floors. The best part of radiant heat is that it does not swirl the hot air around the room and from room to room. Radiant heat just slowly and gently rises, never drying out your skin like forced air heat. It is also totally silent so you never know when it is on or off.

Radiant heat is more expensive to install, and is therefore seldom seen. Homebuilders are, after all, trying to make a decent profit, and the high cost of installing radiant heat would cost them more money. It is a sad fact that most of us will never really know how great radiant heat can be.

Two of the main considerations when exploring the possibility of radiant heat is the cost of installation and your budget. Trying to heat your home with radiant heat, either electric or hydronic, can be prohibitively expensive. This is why most homeowners reserve the luxury for the rooms where the family will spend the most time. Using dry heat all winter can really do a number on your skin, and the fact that radiant heat won’t dry your skin out is one of its’ greatest benefits. In fact, you can’t even begin to compare traditional heat to radiant heat until you have experienced each.

The majority of electricity research focuses on alternative electricity generation. Energy and electricity production has shifted from burning fossil fuels to using alternative sources that are better for the environment. The traditional methods of electricity generation involve burning coal, petroleum and natural gas. But slowly the world is shifting to investigating and producing electricity from alternative sources. Electricity generation from biomass, solar energy, hydropower and wind power have been successfully developed and more research is being conducted to make them cost effective.

The three main reasons to using alternative electricity generation come down to supply and demand and effects on the environment. Fossil fuels do not magically regenerate and will one day run out. This finite resource will also become more expensive as the supply dwindles but the demand remains the same. The majority of all alternative electricity generation focuses on using renewable energy that will not run out one day. Finally all renewable electricity sources are ‘green’ energy and do not pollute the environment.

The use of slow moving ocean currents has successfully generated electricity. This type of electricity generation cannot supply the planets needs but it can supply over 15 billion people by accessing just 0.1% of the ocean’s currents. The vibrations that occur in the water are transformed into energy, which can then produce electricity. These vibrations can be due to gravity, fish swimming or wind at the surface of the ocean.

The development of solar cells is reaching new heights as MIT has produced a solar cell that is 50% more effective then current solar cells. They have also reduced the cost of the solar cell as the silicon found in the cell makes prices increase. Their new cell uses 1% refined silicon making it much more affordable as well as providing more power per area or solar cell.

Burning garbage is another form of alternative electricity generation that has been around for over 100 years but not widely used. This type of electricity generation would not only produce energy but also get rid of much of the world’s garbage that is currently polluting the planet. This is a great method that should be investigated further as the actually transformation of garbage to electricity needs to become more effective to make it a more feasible option of electricity production.

Although it may appear that burning garbage is an inexpensive way to generate alternative electricity, it is uncertain how viable this option really is. Given the current state of technology, the hazards of creating toxic fumes or adding to carbon emissions are greater than the potential benefit of reducing the amount of garbage put into city landfills.

Wind power and solar energy are really the best forms of renewable energy as the sun shines whether it is cloudy or not and wind power is the most efficient form of renewable energy. With the energy challenges to face in the future researchers are investigating electricity generation from the pH difference between soil and trees, cyanobacteria and wind current to name but a few research projects.

Is wind electricity the way for everyone to be electricity self sufficient? Some parts of the country have sufficient reliable wind to make sufficient electricity to serve everyones requirements.
